Is there a benefit to hella lights versus a light bar? Or is it a fashion thing? I ask because ever since I bought my LED worklight for my work bench, I have discovered the magic that is LEDs and have started using them everywhere . My kitchen, dining room and entry ways are now bright as fuck and they use less electricity while producing less waste heat than any other alternative. Seems perfect for an automotive application.
But there seems to be a lot of hate for LED lightbars here. I just can’t figure out why. Because bro truck?

I think Hella's are just more Jalop by virtue of being kind of retro.

Mostly it’s a distance issue where the LED light won’t throw as far. However, I feel that I get some solid side light by the smaller packs on the bumper and decent enough distance on my top mounts.
The small bumper packs aren’t obnoxious and are pointed aggressively to the side so I often run those in heavy snow or rain so I can clearly see the edges of the road, but the top mounts only see middle of the night on an empty trail action.

Can’t speak for everyone but I hate light bars because in my area, the south, they are seen on almost anything and used by idiots who never turn them off. Having a damn Civic with a light bar shining in your rearview on a sunny day is just stupid. Then seeing them on every bro dozer around really makes then worse.

It’s an aesthetics thing. Led bars are better as far as light produced and energy drawn

That’s what I expected the tops would be used for. So they have shroter throw? Does that mean you’re dissapointed with them or are they doing what you required?

I agree excess vehicle lighting is a problem in general, but wouldn’t it still be a problem with traditional lights too?

Honestly I haven’t noticed any lights other than the LEDs being abused.
I’ve never seen someone with Hellas or something older styled like that being left on 24/7
I also don’t see them being stuck to things like Civics

Yeah, I can see developing a hatred for them too. I’ve never seen someone abuse them here in California. I really hate HID kits (especially in trucks).

As you can see in that image, the headlights are pretty pitiful even with $100 halogen bulb packs. I tried running LEDs int the headlights and they were great but I got so much electrical interference from them that my CB radio would not function.
For my truck I don’t intend to run trails at night above 30mph. So for that speed the top lights give me the perfect amount of light thrown out. Especially with the two top mounts going a little further left and right.
When I made the choice for LED part of it was price $60 for a pair instead of $60+ for a single Halogen and the electrical draw on the LEDs is much less.
TL:DR run the dessert at night at high speed go Halogen, run the trails at a moderate pace and want light EVERYWHERE go LED.

I had some of the older vintage 160 Hellas that had a well aimed euro driving pattern. Those had a bowtie shaped beam with a hot center. I traveled across the US about 6 times with those and a pair of Carello fogs. I know the trend is towards LED lamps but I’m not sure if I could do any better than that light setup along with a pair of decent halogen or HID headlamps. It was back in the CB days and I was approaching a truck on I-10 outside El Paso when the driver ahead asked that if the guy with the F-ing bright lights had a radio if I’d please turn them off. I obliged and he let me draft him for the next hour to save gas. When he asked me to turn them off I was over 600 ft behind him on open road.
